Pets sometimes escape from the most responsible of owners. They may break free from a leash or slip through an open door. If the escape happens at night, then your dog is in great danger. If he runs into the street, cars may not see him in time to stop and avoid hitting the pet. You can increase your pet’s chances of survival in these instances by fitting him with a reflective dog collar. This little collar may allow drivers to see your pet in time to stop.

Twenty percent of drivers will hit a pet with their car at sometime. One fourth of those drivers will not stop to check the pet or make a report of the accident. There are millions of pets that die on the road annually and others are simply left to suffer.

As a responsible dog owner, you should consider a reflective dog collar for your pet. These collars are affordable and make your pet move visible to vehicles from a further distance than a pet without the reflective collar. While darkly colored animals may benefit the most from these collars, every pet becomes more visible with a reflective collar. Pets become much more visible in the one to six hundred foot range giving drivers needed response time to brake and miss your beloved pet.

There are two types of dog collars that are called reflective. One depends on prisms that have been formed in the collar to reflect the light of headlights or any other available light to allow your pet to be seen.

The second type of collar technically is not a reflective collar but a phosphorescent one. This collar works like a glow-in-the-dark toy. It absorbs light in the day and gives it off at night. When fully charged by light, these collars work well, but after several hours in the dark, they will lose their glow. By early morning, they may not give the needed light to make your pet visible to cars. They also may not show up as well during very foggy weather.

There are also reflective leashes which match the collars. The additional reflection makes it easier for drivers to see you as well as your pet in the dark.

When pets get loose after dark, its reflective collar can help you to locate the pet. Remember not to chase a loose dog. Grab a favorite treat and call the dog to you. Chasing a pet in the dark can cause it to run into the danger of the street.

Be sure that you attach an ID tag to the collar. The ID tag should have a current phone number so that you can be contacted if your animal is found. This may save your pet a trip to the pound.

Never let your reflective dog collar substitute for the best safety practices. Your dog should never run loose when unattended. If an accident does occur and your dog is injured or killed, then its reflective collar can help you to locate that pet, even in the dark.
